A trigger-point is an area of local facilitation that can be housed in any soft tissue structure, most usually muscle and/or fascia. Palpation from the skin and sometimes with pressure may be required to localise these. Trigger-point therapy is a pain-relief technique to alleviate muscle-spasms and cramping. The therapist locates and deactivates `trigger-points,, which are often tender areas where muscles have been damaged, or have acquired a recurring spasm or ,kink, that worsens painfully when aggravated.
Unlike classic massage therapy which is generally used for relaxation, this technique enables the therapist to focus on and treat specific problems using deeper techniques due to their effectiveness in treating a host of specific issues, the most prevalent being back and shoulder pain.
