Complementary and Alternative Medicine (Master Degree)

Students in the Master of Science in Complementary Medicine Program will complete a minimum of 40 credits above the baccalaureate level including a thesis. The coursework requirements include the academic major, the academic minor, research preparation, the thesis project, and additional electives, as needed, to satisfy the minimum credit requirements. The requirements for the academic major, minor and research preparation coursework are defined by the primary mentor assigned to oversee the student’s program.

Master’s students complete a comprehensive examination at the conclusion of the academic coursework; they prepare a formal thesis proposal, complete the thesis project, and prepare the manuscript for faculty review. Master’s students also complete an oral review of thesis at the conclusion of the physical manuscript review.

Alternative Medicine

As an ancestral healing modality, aromatherapy has long been appreciated for its benefits. Not only do essential oils possess certain physical virtues, but they also exert a holistic action through, among other things, the subtle sense of smell. This course outlines the major components of this therapy in terms of its history, methods of extraction and different uses. It discusses the different properties of essential oils, which are classified into chemotypes based on their composition and content of specific aromatic molecules. An overview of multiple therapeutic indications is given along with a materia medica listing the main essential oils used today. This course allows students to become familiar with this formidable therapeutic tool—a tool that all practitioners may employ as long as they have both sufficient knowledge of the substantial effect of essential oils and the careful attention required to apply them for therapeutic aims.
