Echocardiography, also referred to as cardiac ultrasound, involves the acquisition of 2D images and dynamic 2D image clips that provide the basic visual information for analysis of cardiac size and structure, chamber dimensions, and valvular morphology. This is combined with spectral and color flow Doppler imaging of blood flow patterns through the heart and heart valves and in the major vessels attached to the heart chambers. This hemodynamic information, combined with the 2D imaging, provides a major portion of the information needed for comprehensive assessment of cardiac function and physiology.

Newer imaging modalities are evolving, including Tissue Doppler Imaging, speckle tracking to study myocardial mechanics, and 3D and 4D (live 3D) imaging. The Echocardiographer reports pertinent findings to the physician as part of the diagnostic process. Studies performed include not only the basic echocardiogram, but also stress echocardiograms, pediatric and neonatal echocardiograms, transesophageal echocardiograms, and intra-operative echocardiograms.

The curriculum prepares students to produce diagnostic images of the heart structures and motion to diagnose cardiovascular changes. The echocardiographer uses special equipment to direct high frequency sound waves into areas of the patient’s body. The echocardiographer is a central member of the health care team and assists the radiologist in body image interpretation. Upon successful completion of degree requirements, the student will be eligible to apply to take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography examinations leading to credentials as a Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS®).

Echocardiography is an imaging technique that uses Ultrasound to examine the heart. It provides direct visualization of the cardiac chambers, walls and valves. The role of the Echocardiographer is to integrate academic knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology with technical imaging expertise in following progression of known disease or determining reasons for symptoms in each patient situation. Their ability to interact effectively with patients plays a large role in their success. Echocardiographers work under the supervision of physicians.
