Molecular Genetics (Master Degree)

Provide instruction in current concepts and techniques of molecular genetics as applied in modern research, offer practical experience of experimental techniques and provide a framework to develop skills to plan research and devise strategies to achieve specific goals. It also acts as a springboard for graduates who want employment in molecular, biomedical or biotechnological research, or for entry to PhD programmes.

Course modules
The laboratory course comprises taught practical modules that introduce a variety of modern molecular techniques and research strategies, supported by a lecture programme. Students then undertake a seven-month research project chosen from a broad range offered by Departments of the College of Medicine, Biological Sciences and Psychology, the MRC Toxicology Unit, or collaborating research institutes or industrial partners (when available). The spread of projects covers a wide variety of disciplines involving molecular genetics and a variety of organisms.

To respond to the national and international need for trained bioinformaticians by teaching Biological Sciences graduates the theoretical and practical analytical skills used in bioinformatics. A four-month project placement in industry, a research institute or a University research laboratory is an integral part of the course. The course prepares graduates for employment in the post-genomics era, either directly or as the result of subsequent study.

Bachelor of Genetics

The field of genetics has been advancing at an accelerating rate. Population genetics, molecular genetics, and general genetic theory and associated biotechnology now impact on all major fields of biology, from neurobiology and physiology to ecology and conservation biology. The ease with which genetic technology can now be accessed has led to a fragmentation of the field, and a shortage of broadly educated geneticists who can assimilate and synthesise data from all fields. The Bachelor of Genetics degree will give students a solid grounding in all aspects of the field, including the traditional areas of Mendelian genetics, population genetics, evolutionary genetics, and more recent developments in molecular genetics, medical genetics and bioinformatics. The ANU is particularly well placed to present this degree, with contributing geneticists from the Research School of Biology, Biological Anthropology, and John Curtin School of Medical Research, as well as genetic counsellors from The Canberra Hospital.

If you are interested in a career in applied science and want a course that combines both theory and practical skills, the BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science could be for you. It offers an excellent foundation for you to progress into further study at university or as a route into science-based employment.

What do I need to get a place on the course?
You need a minimum of 4 GCSEs grades C and above including Science, Maths and English or an equivalent qualification such as a BTEC Level 2 Diploma at Merit level and you will need to show that you are capable of working beyond GCSE in Science. A place on the course is subject to a successful interview and you will also be expected to provide a satisfactory reference.

How is the course assessed?
You have a number of assignments to complete and these are assessed at Pass, Merit or Distinction level. If you successfully complete the course you will be awarded a BTEC Extended Diploma in Applied Science. This is equivalent to three A levels.
