The Ferris Legal Studies program provides students with a curriculum that emphasizes a broad-based knowledge of the law, with an emphasis on legal research and writing skills. Students interested in working as paralegals, legal assistants, court personnel, or in occupations that require a strong legal background should consider this program. Ferris graduates have been very successful in using this degree as a background for a variety of occupations and as preparation for law school.

As a student, you will be required to complete courses in legal research, criminal and civil procedure, real estate law, probate and estate planning. In addition, you will study business courses in accounting, business law and computers. General education courses are also required and include English, mathematics and public speaking.

Ferris has an excellent legal collection, and research classes are taught in the library. Lexis-Nexis and WESTLAW, computerized legal research databases, are available.

The Paralegal Program prepares students to work as paralegals (sometimes referred to as legal assistants). Graduates will be knowledgeable about and have expertise in the operation of the legal system, substantive laws and legal procedures. Paralegals may perform functions delegated by an attorney, such as conducting interviews with clients and witnesses, conducting legal research, and drafting documents. Paralegals are typically employed by lawyers, law offices, corporations, or governmental agencies. (Paralegals may not perform attorney functions, such as providing legal advice or representing a client in court.)

This program is housed in the Department of Justice, Law and Public Safety Studies. Employed by law firms, corporations, financial institutions, and government agencies, paralegals work under the supervision of attorneys and may be responsible for a wide range of legal work including preparing pleadings, interviewing clients, researching legal problems, and drafting legal documents. Paralegals play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of a law firm.

MacCormac College established the first Paralegal Studies Program in Illinois in 1973, MacCormac graduates are well-respected in the legal industry. MacCormac’s Associate Degree Program also trains Paralegal students within high-need areas of the job market by providing elective course options focused on those types of law which are most in demand, such as bankruptcy. Paralegal students have the opportunity to complete a supervised internship which allows them to define career goals, gain experience and acquire self-confidence in the workplace.

Our LLM in U.S. Legal Studies offers practicing foreign attorneys enhanced employability by deepening their knowledge of legal specialties and expanding their knowledge of U.S. and international law. While many other U.S. graduate programs only permit degree candidates to take a few courses outside of a tightly defined specialty, our program allows degree candidates the versatility to pursue almost the full range of undergraduate and graduate law courses offered by John Marshall. Each degree candidate will consult with the Center director to design a personalized degree program.

Requirements

LLM in U.S. Legal Studies candidates must complete 24 credit hours in order to earn their degree. In addition to required courses, candidates will select elective courses to fulfill their degree requirements. Degree candidates must graduate within five years with a 2.5 GPA or higher.

Oil and Gas Law

This course will examine the process by which oil, gas, and other minerals are produced and the legal issues relative to the various stages of production. It will also explore the property rights that allow for production. Students will learn to prepare deeds, leases, utilization contracts, releases and other legal documents by which those rights are created and extinguished. Examples of topics covered by the course will include, among others, environmental remediation of oilfield sites, federal and state regulation of the oil and gas industry, mineral royalty disputes, oil and gas exploration and production.

E-Discovery

This advanced civil discovery course is designed for students to learn and apply current e-Discovery concepts and procedures required in modern civil discovery and complex litigation. Legal disputes increasingly require the collection and analysis of electronically stored information (ESI) as part of the discovery phase of litigation, and corporations must meet certain electronic information requirements to mitigate risk and expense. In this course, students learn to apply the Electronic Data Reference Model (EDRM) to properly manage the various stages of e-Discovery including information management, identification, preservation and collection, review and analysis, production and presentation. Students will learn to use e-Discovery software and tools and apply this understanding to real world case scenarios through projects requiring the application of case management systems. Students also demonstrate knowledge of case law relating to e-Discovery issues in various projects and assignments.

The Associate of Applied Science Degree in Paralegal Studies provides a more comprehensive preparation for a paralegal career, and is the perfect next step for those who have completed the Paralegal Certificate Program and want to earn their college degree. It provides a practical and intense study of a variety of areas of law and completes this experience through a well-rounded offering of general education classes.

Students who have completed the Paralegal Certificate Program are automatically accepted into the A.A.S. Degree program along with their completed coursework and credits. Other students must hold a minimum of a high school diploma or its equivalent and pass an entrance exam in order to be accepted into this program.

Students may complete their degree in as little as 15 months (including their certificate) by attending on-campus morning classes or 21 months in evening online paralegal program. The paralegal degree consists of a total of 62 semester credit hours.

This program is streamlined to provide education in the most employable and demanding areas of the law, while still offering the essential paralegal courses of study. Certificates may be earned in only 6 months by attending morning classes or 8 months in the evening online paralegal certificate program.

The Paralegal Certificate program is 24 semester credit hours.
