We recognize that occupational science has much to offer rehabilitation science and provides interventions that facilitate people living with physical disabilities to engage more fully in life. Master clinicians with nationally recognized expertise in a variety of areas of practice including delivery of occupation-centered treatment, neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT), technology, ergonomics, dysphagia and hand therapy teach the physical disabilities electives. When taken together, these electives build a specialty focus. Based on theory that has emerged from occupational science, course assignments emphasize the use of occupation as both a means and an end. Laboratory experiences are held in a state-of-the-art facility that includes a complete kitchen, dining room, bedroom and bathroom area with an array of adaptive equipment and environmental modifications. For those students particularly interested in rehabilitation science, electives in motor learning, biomedical engineering and universal design can be taken in other schools at USC.

Occupational Therapy is based on the belief that humans have an innate need to engage in everyday life tasks and activities that support their individual areas of occupation. Engagement in occupations is related to one’s health, well-being, adaptation and life satisfaction. Individuals are entitled to engage in occupations that they find purposeful and meaningful. It is then the role of the occupational therapy assistant to direct their effort toward helping clients engage in daily life activities. The occupational therapy assistant’s knowledge of occupation is used to affect human performance so that the individual can reach his or her highest level of functioning regardless of disability, age, gender, race, or cultural background.
