Our nation’s dynamic, fast-paced health care field is evolving rapidly and demands more well-trained, licensed respiratory therapists and respiratory therapy technicians to staff hospitals, sleep labs and other health-related facilities. The Associate in Applied Science in Respiratory Therapy program introduces students to the knowledge and skills necessary to obtain entry-level positions as respiratory therapists/respiratory therapy technicians. Working under the medical direction of doctors or a licensed respiratory therapist, a respiratory therapist evaluates and treats cardiopulmonary (heart and lung) health and teaches patients and their families about treatment and maintenance of pulmonary health problems, including the use of respiratory therapy equipment and medications.

The Respiratory Therapy program at St. Augustine College is designed to train students in the field of respiratory care. Students will receive essential knowledge to integrate didactic, laboratory, and clinical information to fulfill their roles as respiratory therapists in hospitals, home care and other health care environments.

The program will prepare students as respiratory therapists capable of providing specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in areas such as pulmonary function testing, arterial blood gas analysis, medical gas administration, humidity and aerosol therapy, airway management, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and ventilatory support of neonatal/pediatric and adult populations.

The advanced-practice respiratory therapist program is a 74 credit hours program (6 semesters). The Master of Science in respiratory care degree program requires a minimum of 119 quarter credit hours taken at the graduate level.

The professional phase of the program:
•Includes coursework and clinical fieldwork
•Is completed at Rush University and its affiliated clinical sites
•Takes approximately 21 months to complete

Graduates awarded a Master of Science in respiratory care are eligible to sit for the Entry Level Certification (CRT) Examination and the Written Registry and Clinical Simulation Examination for Advanced Respiratory Therapists (RRT), given by the National Board for Respiratory Care.

The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) Degree in Respiratory Care is a full-time or part-time program during the day and includes parallel clinical training in various Valley hospitals. Certified Respiratory Therapists with three years of work experience might be able to fulfill all or part of their clinical training in a non-traditional manner.

Successful completion of the AAS Degree Respiratory Care Program enables the student to take the National Board of Respiratory Care Entry Level examination and the National Board for Respiratory Care Advanced Practitioner Examination.
