Surface and Textile Design is an introductory studio course in various methods of designing pattern and printing and dyeing textiles. The focus will be on learning the steps in designing textiles and creating pieces of work using one or two of these techniques. Traditional methods of textile design such as batik, shibori, and silk painting will be studied. Students will gain knowledge of the design process including visualization, communication, inspiration and influence. Completion of EXRI 4678 is strongly recommended.

Pattern Making Workshop

This workshop will give a brief introduction to the fundamentals of pattern making for apparel and soft product design. Through a series of demonstrations balanced with theory and practical knowledge, the principles behind pattern-making processes will be revealed. Students will learn about the tools involved in the basic prototype lifecycle, flat pattern anatomy and the methods of transforming the 2D template into a 3D form.

Small Scale Tapestry

Learn how to hand-weave your own tapestry. Using simple, portable frame looms, you will weave a small sampler showing basic tapestry weaving techniques, including shape-building and colour-blending with yarn. Looms and yarn will be provided.

This course is a survey of the history and science of fabrics through lectures on major decorative arts periods as well as textile design, fibers, methods of weaving, dyeing, flammability, finishes, and trims. Properties, code requirements, and maintenance of contract and residential fabrics and their application are covered as well as estimating yardage. The course also covers the history of wallpaper and carpeting and their application to today’s interiors. Students will need access to a computer with a web cam since the midterm and final exams are administered online by ProctorU, and paid for directly by each student.

Textile Science I - Students study fibers, yarns, and fabrics, and acquire a practical understanding of how each affects the appearance and performance of the textile product. Issues of sustainability are examined as they relate to the cultivation and production of fibers. Students learn to make fabric choices based on an understanding of the woven structure and knowledge of individual fabric properties.
Required for Fashion Design majors.

Textile Science II - Students study knit construction, its design possibilities, and how it affects the performance of the fabric and finished product. Students knit swatches using a variety of stitches, combining yarns and varying gauge. Other topics include dyeing, printing, and finishes as processes that affect the aesthetic appeal of the finished product, and as functional finishes that enhance performance. The impact of these processes are examined.
Required for Fashion Design majors.
