Early Childhood Education - Online

School/Trainer: Mercy College Manhattan Campus
New York City, United States

Early childhood is a critical period in human development. Influencing a young child’s growth, development and learning during this stage has lifelong implications. Early childhood professionals can find their work deeply fulfilling as they witness children say their first words, paint their first pictures or learn to write their names.

At Mercy College, the 39-credit Master of Science in Early Childhood Education, Birth-Grade 2, prepares teacher candidates and early childhood professionals for New York State certification. Coursework, field experiences and clinical practice, such as student teaching, help candidates for a career in early childhood education.

Early Childhood Education candidates can pursue multiple certificates:
Early Childhood, Birth to Grade 2
Early Childhood, Birth to Grade 2 and Childhood Education, Grades 1-6, Dual Certification
Early Childhood, Birth to Grade 2 and Childhood Education, Grades 1-6, with Students with Disabilities, Triple Certification

Dual or Triple certifications require additional courses and field experiences. In order to gain initial certification, candidates must complete the required coursework and practicums and pass state examinations. Professional certification (permanent) requires an initial certificate and three years of teaching experience.

Early Childhood Education with Bilingual/ESL Specialization - Online

School/Trainer: Erikson Institute
Chicago, United States

Erikson’s specialization in bilingual/English as a second language (ESL) education responds to the urgent need for more early childhood teachers who can effectively meet the special needs of new language learners in a culturally, linguistically, and developmentally appropriate manner.

Bilingual/ESL endorsement

For teachers with a valid Illinois Type 03 or Type 04 certificate, the program will also fulfill the Illinois State Board of Education requirements for adding the bilingual and/or ESL endorsement.

Bilingual approval typically allows an early childhood teacher to instruct young children in their native language and English. ESL approval typically prepares monolingual early childhood teachers to effectively instruct new language learners in English.

To earn the M.S. in Early Childhood Education with a Specialization in Bilingual/English as a Second Language, you complete the online early childhood education program, substituting five specialization courses for core courses, and also take one additional course.

The specialization includes a culminating action research project that explores the particular developmental characteristics and learning needs of dual language children.
