In this course students will learn to develop their design skills and enhance their design vocabulary as it relates to developing highly realized characters in 3D. Using a wide range of exercises, students will learn techniques and gain knowledge of a variety of new toolsets used to generate more believable characters. The core concepts will focus on developing design sensibility and the creative process. Although this course is not software centric, knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, ZBrush and a 3D software package (ie. Maya, 3ds Max) are highly recommended.

Introduction to 3D with Maya

The course will focus on the basics of 3D computer graphics using Autodesk Maya. Students will be introduced to the Maya interface and philosophy, as well as 3D modeling, texturing, lighting and rendering. Lectures will cover the application of these tools in the film, television and game industries. The first eight weeks will be devoted to instruction and homework, with one-on-one help from the instructor. The remainder of the term will be devoted to personal projects, beginning in week five. Students will complete the course with a series of stills.
