Food and Nutrition study teaches the concept of Chinese diet therapy and its relation to Western nutrition. Using the Eight Parameters as a reference, the class discusses dietary transition, water and protein, oils and fats, sweeteners, salt, vitamins, green foods, combining foods, fasting, children’s diet, Five Elements and the five flavors, using food in the treatment of diseases, food energetics, and nutritional recommendations. There are discussions on applying Chinese diet therapy in the clinical setting.

Pharmacognosy and Drug Interaction

Advanced Acupuncture

Advanced Acupuncture 1 is a study designed to take the student from the theoretical material presented in the earlier classes(Diagnostic Methods, Diagnostic Systems and Point Indication), into the practical treatment of specific diseases and syndrome presentations as they appear in the clinic. In Advanced Acupuncture 1 study begins with an introduction to general principles of treatment, basic principles for selection of points and applications of specific points. In addition, the study covers etiology, pathology and the differentiation and treatment of individual disorders in internal medicine. Organization of the subject matter is based on specific TCM disease categories grouped according to the organ network with which they are most commonly associated. Further differentiation of TCM patterns is presented for each disease category along with treatment principles for each pattern, recommended treatment points and modalities. In most cases, relevant biomedical material is presented in order to enable the student to determine a prognosis and identify cases which require referral to appropriate non-TCM practitioners.

Yoga

Yoga is the Tao of India. Tao means ’the way’ and Yoga means ’Union.’ There are eight different Yogas. The main goal of Yoga is to join the known with the unknown. The material with the spiritual. The mind with the body. The man with the Human. Hu means godlike. In this course we will be studying Hatha Yoga. Hatha is concerned with health and physical conditioning. We will learn standing and floors postures to stretch and strengthen the entire body. Altogether we may cover at least 36 different postures.

Taoist Philosophy and Meditation

Chinese Qi Kung Exercises

Qi Kung refers to the long and arduous practice of physical movement and controlled breathing techniques. This course will cover at least three unique and powerful Qi Kung techniques. We will start with the famous Tai Chi Qi Kung exercises. That will be followed by the age old practice of Eight treasure Exercises developed by General Yow to invigorate his down cast army. And finally the 16th Century Taoist Dragon Gate Qi Kung designed for health and spiritual development.

This course provides a general study of the human body’s normal structure and function. It covers the major organ systems of the body, including the skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, circulatory, lymphatic, respiratory, reproductive and digestive systems. Emphasis is placed on the complex nature of the body, the interrelationship of the organs, and the body’s ability to adapt to the environment.


Shiatsu and Tui Na (Certificate)

Our Shiatsu courses are limited to licensed Massage Therapists and are designed to give a comprehensive training in the Oriental techniques of hand therapy. Shiatsu students are taught a full body treatment from the Hoshino School of Shiatsu.

In addition to 90 classroom hours in the Theory and Practice of Oriental Medicine, students are required to complete sixty hours of clinical practice prior to certification.

The Certification Program is 150 hours long and can be completed in only four to six weeks.
