Have you every wanted to try backpacking, but felt intimidated by all there is to know? Thought about trying it out, but not comfortable on your own?
This trip is designed to teach first-time or new backpackers the skills to enjoy backpacking as a summer activity.

At the Backpacking Basics lecture, you&,#146,ll learn about the equipment and skills you need. Then, on an easy overnight trip in Kananaskis, you&,#146,ll have the chance to put it all together and practice with an experienced guide.

All trips include: introductory lecture, permits, camping fees, guide, group camping gear, and a 10% discount on gear rentals. (backpacks, sleeping bags and other camping gear can be rented through the Outdoor Centre.)

Backpacking/Rock Climbing

You can earn industry certifications in avalanche skills training, ski/snowboard instruction, swift water rescue, and more. You can also gain university credits towards a degree in Adventure Tourism.

BACKPACKING

This course runs for approximately half the semester and
includes a 2 ½ day/2‐night camping trip in September or early
October. The class meets three times before the trip to
prepare. There is also one post‐trip wrap‐up class. Students
cover many topics, such as food, clothing, footwear,
minimizing our environmental footprint, packing, tracking
animals, first aid, fire‐building, team‐building, cooperation and
stewardship. The course is designed for beginner to advanced
levels. Because students carry all of their gear, which is
supplied by the College, in a 40‐pound backpack for five to six
hours on the hike into camp, they need endurance and a great
attitude. The course fee covers transportation, trail and
camping costs

Appalachian Mountains Backpacking & Whitewater Canoeing

Take your journey deep into some of the oldest mountains in the world, where North Carolina Outward Bound School was founded. For nearly 50 years, NCOBS has delivered wilderness courses among the highest mountains east of the Mississippi, in the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests.

While exploring this unique mountain forest, its thick mountain laurel and rhododendron, cool mountain streams and unique rock formations, participants will acquire many skills. This whitewater canoeing focused course teaches participants to read the water, scout rapids, and coordinate paddle strokes as they work together to paddle through churning river rapids. Participants will develop teamwork, leadership and confidence while working together with their group to meet daily goals.

In addition to being put to the test physically, participants will build communication and leadership skills, confidence, initiative and teamwork that will leave them with a newfound strength that can easily be applied to everyday obstacles. No prior experience is necessary.

Backpacking isn&,#146,t just a way to get from here to there, it&,#146,s a process of moving, exploring, taking in the surrounding and working as a team. Starting with the basics, this workshop provides an opportunity for those novice&,#146,s who are interested in learning and expanding their backpacking and camping skills. With one night of camping out and three days of instruction we will have plenty of time to cover a fair distance on the trail while also taking time to cover topics such as navigation, backcountry first-aid, backpacking equipment, Leave-No-Trace principles, trip planning and much more. We will balance our travel distance and pace as well as the amount of time spent teaching to fit the desires of the group. The area we will be backpacking through does include some steep and rough terrain, so you should expect a fairly strenuous experience.
