The Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree in Dental Hygiene prepares students to practice entry-level dental hygiene. Dental hygiene students will provide preventive and therapeutic services, and will develop a commitment to the community through extramural opportunities serving diverse populations. The program is a blend of academic and clinical coursework that requires attention to detail and motivation to complete tasks on a timeline. Graduates are employed in private dental offices, hospitals, schools, and clinics, within their community.

The Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association (211 E. Chicago Ave., Chicago, Ill. 60611-2678 (312) 440-4653) grants accreditation to the Phoenix College, Rio Salado College, and Mesa Community College programs. The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. Graduates are eligible for board examinations and licensure in all 50 states.

This course prepares the student to assist in dental practices. Classroom and practical instruction includes oral health, dental disease prevention, infection control, dental instrumentation, oral anatomy, and assisting in the delivery of dental care and treatment. Upon successful completion, the student is awarded a certificate of completion from UT Arlington. Students interested in becoming registered with the State of Texas must take a state mandated registration course and exam. Information on this course is available through the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners website at tsde.state.tx.us. Certifying bodies may require documents as proof of employment eligibility. All programs include HIPAA, infection control, blood borne pathogens, personal protective equipment and hand washing review.

Prerequisites: High school diploma or equivalent and current immunizations.

The Dental Assisting Program is designed to prepare the student to function effectively as an integral member of the dental health care team. Stimulating, fast paced instruction relies heavily on students participation. Course provides classroom instruction and basic clinical assisting skills. During the ten weeks of training, students will learn dental theory and terminology, the techniques of four-handed chairside procedures, exposing and processing dental radiographs or x-rays including an introduction to digital and panoramic radiology. Instruction also covers infection control standards, obtaining impressions of the oral cavity for the fabrication of study models and custom trays used for vital bleaching procedures, preparing dental material, fabrication of provisional coverage. Students will spend time assisting and observing in a participating dental office.
