You’ve always dreamed of playing guitar, and now is the time to begin. With Acoustic Guitar Basics, you will start at the beginning, learning how to tune your instrument, identify the strings and how to play basic chords. You will learn how to “count?music and learn to play in different time signatures. You don’t need to know any music theory to start this class, you will learn the necessary basics as we go along.

You’ll learn how a capo works, and how to find the right range to match your guitar and voice. You will be introduced to the Nashville numbering system that will enable you to understand the musical construction of any song you ever hear. You will learn basic right-hand strumming patterns, and how to keep time.

By the end of this class, you will be able to play a handful of simple tunes with confidence, and you’ll be ready to branch out into more complex works!

Guitar - Alternate Tunings

Explore expand and explode your guitar world by learning alternate tunings. Old time blues players used a variety of weird tunings. Keith Richards used open tunings for all the Rolling Stones work. Players like Ry Cooder, Kurt Cobain, Joni Mitchell and Bruce Cockburn use a wide variety of different tunings to get their sounds.

In this course, you will start with learning how to create simple open tunings with a capo. Then, you will learn how to re-tune your guitar, to learn about the various families of different open tunings, and the variations of major, minor, and modal. You’ll learn about the Nashville number system of naming chords, which will enable you to play in any key, any tuning easily.

Each week, instructor Sandy MacKay will present a new tuning, and give you the chord charts to enable you find your way around. You’ll learn a simple song each week using the new tuning, to familiarize you with the new tuning, to then use it on your own works or your favourite songs.
