This intensive hands-on program provides training in the operation of heavy equipment, routine maintenance of machinery, and the practical field operations of excavating, land clearing, grading and road building. The curriculum includes pre-operational checks of equipment, as well as safe operating techniques specific to each machine.

This program is the only one of its kind offered at a publicly-funded post-secondary institution in B.C. Training can be customized to meet individual needs, as well as those of employers and industry. Training is available on excavators, backhoe/loaders, front-end loaders, graders, bulldozers, dump truck and pup, articulated rock trucks and skid steers. Class 1 and 3 driver training is also available.

Progress is monitored by the instructors as students move through a series of work projects. Progress varies for each person and depends on individual ability to master operating techniques. The instructors are highly trained and have extensive operating knowledge on all machines.

Mining Haul Truck Operator

The full-time, 36-week foundation program covers basic theory and provides hands-on training to prepare you for an entry positions in the heavy duty and commercial transport industry.

Heavy-duty equipment mechanics repair, troubleshoot and maintain mobile heavy-duty equipment used in transportation, construction, forestry, manufacturing, farming, mining and similar activities. The program is the first level of the technical training for both the HD and CT Mechanics Apprenticeship. We also offer six-week, fixed intake Apprenticeship training.

Camosun College’s 10 month full-time Heavy Duty/Commercial Transport Mechanic program will give you the skills and theory you’ll need to enter the trade. You’ll be trained to become proficient in the service and maintenance of on- and off-highway vehicles, with special emphasis on electrical and hydraulic systems, air and hydraulic brakes, power trains and engine systems. Through this Foundation program, you will also be given three weeks of work experience.

Upon successful completion of the program, you will be awarded a Certificate in Heavy Duty Mechanic Foundation and a Certificate in Commercial Transport Mechanic Foundation.

Apprentices registered in the Heavy Duty Equipment Technician trade are scheduled for three eight-week sections of in-school training which is scheduled through the Ministry of Training, Colleges &, Universities.

Graduates of the program will meet all the requirements of the Motive Power Technician Diploma program.

The South Seattle Community College Diesel and Heavy Equipment Technology program trains students in all aspects of diesel and heavy equipment repair. Technicians are likely to:
•Repair and maintain trucks, buses, construction equipment, ships, trains, generators, tractors, power equipment and farm machinery
•Use laptop computers and scan tools to access fault codes and make accurate diagnosis of the problem. Technicians frequently use electrical multimeters, pressure gauges and flow meters to find the cause of mechanical failures. They replace worn and defective parts and they test equipment prior to its returning to service.
•Work indoors, but occasionally work outside if a vehicle needs repair on the road or at a job site. Most shops are well lighted, heated and ventilated.
•Move and lift tools and parts. May occasionally experience minor cuts and bruises, however, with proper safety training and practices the possibility of serious injury is alleviated.
