The Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate Program (HEO) provides you with the knowledge and skills required to enter the workforce as an entry level heavy equipment operator. In 12 weeks, plus a practicum, you will focus on jobsite fundamentals including:

health, safety, and environmental training and awareness,
equipment maintenance and operation,
and application of earth moving techniques in hands-on operations.

You will be trained to operate selected pieces of equipment, which could include: compactor, loader, dozer, grader and excavator.

Pre-Employment Heavy Equipment Technician

If you enjoy maintaining and repairing equipment, you can&,#146,t get much bigger than the heavy equipment and off-road industry! Heavy Equipment Technicians typically repair and overhaul engines, mechanical and powershift transmissions, hydraulics, and basic electrical systems on mobile and stationary equipment. This 12 week program will introduce you to the maintenance of a wide variety of equipment including trucks and trailers, off-road, and earthmoving equipment.

Upon successful completion of the pre-employment program, students who meet the apprenticeship requirements for the trade (see www.tradesecrets.org) are eligible to write the first period apprenticeship exam. (There is a fee, payable to Apprenticeship and Industry Training, to write the exam. This fee is in addition to tuition, books and supplies.) CSA approved personal protective equipment is required to complete the practical portion of this program. You may be required to purchase other tools and equipment for your chosen trade.

This one day course trains you in the safe and efficient use of side-by-side utility terrain vehicles (UTV), excluding Argos. The course includes both classroom and practical training. Topics covered include, safe riding practices and strategies, quick stops and swerving, pre-ride inspections, ride over obstacles, personal protective equipment (PPE), traversing, turning basics-sharp turns, quick turns, loading and transporting, and transporting materials. Students are required to wear Department of Transportation (DOT) approved helmet, eye protection, gloves, boots, long pants, and long sleeves. The UTV rider Course is a nationally recognized program, developed by the Canada Safety Council, for the benefit of both industrial and recreational UTV operators.

FINNtech is a unique heavy equipment technician diploma program offered through a partnership between Keyano College and Finning, the world’s largest dealership of Caterpillar equipment. This 20-month program is designed to provide the technical training to meet the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Examination requirements for Heavy Equipment Technicians, and offers students first-hand theory and technical training focused on Caterpillar’s equipment.

During the program, students complete five rotations of 16-week terms consisting of both technical training and paid work: they go to school for two months, then work for two months (earning while they are learning), repeating the two-month rotation five times.

Upon successful completion of this program, students will have obtained a Heavy Equipment Technician Diploma from Keyano College, as well as 20 months and 1800 hours of work experience recognized towards their apprenticeship. Our Heavy Equipment Technician program provides you with hands-on experience while learning to maintain, repair and overhaul heavy vehicles and industrial equipment such as rippers, ditchers, backhoes, scrapers, tractors and trucks.
