Our Clinical Laboratory Technician program will prepare you with the skills you need to test blood and other bodily fluids for the detection, diagnosis and treatment of disease. You will learn how to use laboratory instruments and computers, collect and process specimens, and work as part of a health care team. As you progress through the program, you will receive lab training and classroom study, supervised time in hospitals and health care settings, and preparation to take a national exam for certification accepted throughout the United States. By graduating with this degree, you will be eligible to take the MLT (Medical Laboratory Technician) and CLT (Clinical Laboratory Technician) exams.

This program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences.

The Master of Biotechnology Program prepares students, both full- and part-time, for leadership in the critically important and dynamic industries of biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. Strongly interdisciplinary, this innovative professional master&,#146,s program draws its faculty and courses from the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Penn&,#146,s world-class biomedical research centers, renowned science departments and position at the hub of the largest pharmaceutical/biotechnology corridor in the United States, place this program at the vanguard of biotechnology education. Four parallel curriculum tracks: 1) molecular biotechnology, 2) biopharmaceutical engineering biotechnology, 3) computational biology/bioinformatics, and 4) biomedical technologies give students flexibility to tailor their degree to their background, interests and current career or career goals. These tracks, in combination with core courses, insure that students get a uniquely broad exposure to the entire field of biotechnology. This course explores the regulatory and quality assurance issues pertinent to pre-clinical safety research. Research study design and processes will be analyzed by pharmacologic and toxicologic methods and for carcinogenicity and reproductive toxicology. Graduates of the Medical Laboratory Technology program earn the Medical Laboratory Technology Associate in Applied Sciences degree. The 72-credit-hour associate degree program blends science, liberal arts and technical courses in classroom and clinical settings.

Before you can apply for admission to the MLT program, you must first complete the 39-credit-hour Medical Laboratory Technology Core Curriculum, which includes general education and related health classes and can be completed in two semesters.

You can then apply for admission to the MLT program, which accepts students via a competitive selection process based on grade point average in the primary prerequisite courses. MLT courses begin in mid-May of each academic year. Over a 16-month period, you’ll take lecture, lab and clinical course work.

When you graduate, you’ll be eligible to take the Board of Certification exam to become licensed as a medical laboratory technician through the American Society for Clinical Pathology. Our students?pass rate on this exam is generally more than 90 percent each year, well above the national pass rate average.

The El Centro College Biotechnology program offers individuals the choice of a Level I Certificate or a two-year Associate Degree program. The program is designed to prepare the graduate for entry-level positions in biotechnology, biological research and industrial laboratories.

Biotechnology students will study the theories of modern advances in biotechnology, molecular biology, DNA and RNA technology, and bioethics. Skills will include laboratory management and safety, laboratory operations, planning, recording, and reporting experiments, caring for equipment and living cells, cell and tissue culture, genetics, pipetting, technical writing, and statistical analysis. The final semester will include a capstone internship which will provide a transitional experience from course work to workplace.
