The Biological Sciences undergraduate degree program aims to diversely train its students, enabling graduates to pursue careers or advanced degrees in life and health sciences, research, education, industry, or governmental work. The biotechnology industry is one of the fastest growing industries in northeastern Ohio. The Certificate in Biotechnology ?Laboratory Track, which is administered through the Department of Biological, Geological, and Environmental Sciences, is an interdisciplinary program that builds on majors in biology or chemistry and exposes students to areas ofknowledge that are not part of the typical major, but are underpinnings for the biotechnology industry. The certificate program provides students with the appropriate qualifications to enter the segment of the workforce that is responsible for the development and quality-control aspects of the biotechnology industry. Students in the Biotechnology Certificate Program are eligible to participate in the Cooperative Education Program through the Career Services Center even if they are not seeking a degree at Cleveland State University.

of both worlds. Medical laboratory scientists, also called clinical
laboratory scientists, work in all areas of the medical laboratory

Medical Technology (or Clinical Laboratory Science as it is also known) involves specific training for those that wish to work in the hospital laboratory or in commercial laboratories supporting hospital activities. These include work in a spectrum of activities involving analytical chemistry, bioanalytical procedures, and microbiology doing tasks like blood and tissue typing, testing for immunological compatibility, testing for clinical levels of drugs and/or alcohol in blood and other samples, DNA sequencing, identifying pathogenic microorganisms, and similar types of activities.

The program includes three years of courses laying a scientific foundation in both biology and chemistry including Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, General Microbiology, and Immunology. Then students go to one of our partner hospital campuses ?IU Health Methodist Hospital or Franciscan St. Francis Health here in Indianapolis or Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana ?for 10 - 11 months of clinical training in the hospital laboratory. The Med Lab Tech program gives students an AAS (Associate in Applied Science) degree by completing 5 semesters of curriculum. The curriculum includes clinical lab techniques, liberal arts and science, and a six month hospital assignment.

The program is accredited by the National AccreditingAgency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS)*. DMACC partners with local health facilities including: Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Iowa Lutheran, Broadlawns, and VA. The program is willing to make arrangements with local hospitals as well, so student can participate in their clinical training close to home.
