The students will learn the basic steps and a few variations of four International Ballroom dances (Cha Cha Cha, Rumba, Jive and Samba), and three Latin Dances (Salsa, Merengue and Bachata). The material will also include the history and cultural background of the dances.
Dances are learned as a communication skill-set, similar to a language, which contribute to personal and interpersonal development. The students will learn a variety of social skills related to behaviour in a formal or semi-formal and social environment, such as a ball, dinner-dance, and business gatherings that include dancing. As part of this course, the students will be required to research, analyze and present information regarding the history and cultural background of the dances taught.

This practical course for intermediate pianists at ABRSM Grade 3 standard or higher will introduce you to the dynamic role of the piano in Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian music. The course will focus on rhythm, playing different Latin piano styles and soloing. You will play digital pianos and percussion in class and experience the thrill of playing in a Latin music ensemble.

What topics will we cover?

Introduction to Salsa, Son Montuno, Mambo, Cha-cha-cha and Bolero and Afro-Brazillian piano styles and aproaches to soloing in these styles
Montunos and how to play them including common variations
The different percussion instrumentsused in Salsa (congas, bongos,clave, guiro and cowbells0 and their associated rhythms/patterns as well as percussion instruments used in Afro-Brazillian music.

By the end of this course you should be able to:
