Learn heavy duty mechanics. This program is designed for the apprentice currently working in the heavy duty equipment industry. Apprentice training is designed to meet the needs of both the student and industry by providing comprehensive and up-to-date training. Upon completion, apprentices return to industry with an increased, comprehensive skill set.

There are four training sessions offered over a four-year period. Levels 1, 2 , 3 and 4 are each four and a half weeks in length (180 hours). Level 1 covers hydraulics and a variety of braking systems. Level 2 advances the apprentice&,#146,s skills in servicing diesel engines. Level 3 provides the apprentice with competency in electrical and electronic systems. Level 4 completes the training with students developing skills in power train components and air conditioning systems.

Students train in classrooms and shops at VCC&,#146,s facility at the Broadway campus. In our on-site, real-world automotive shop, you鈥檒l apply your knowledge and learn the mechanics of cars, trucks, commercial transport vehicles and heavy equipment.

This nine-month program prepares students for entry level positions as apprentices in three trades: Automotive Service Technician, Commercial Transport Mechanics and Heavy Duty Mechanics.

Students engage in a variety of classroom and shop activities. They learn theoretical principles of vehicle mechanics in the classroom. They apply their knowledge in the shop where they perform numerous diagnostic procedures, preventative maintenance procedures, removals, repairs, and installations of components on cars, trucks, commercial transport vehicles and heavy equipment.

Graduates of the General Mechanics Foundation Program at Selkirk College earn advance credit for Module One of the Heavy Duty Mechanics trade and Module One of the Commercial Transport Mechanics trade. This 38-week program takes students with little or no previous experience in either the Heavy Duty or Commercial Transport Mechanic trade and supplies them with the necessary skills to seek employment in the industry. Instruction in theoretical and practical components of Heavy Duty and Commercial Transport Mechanics are included, giving students the opportunity to enter either trade as an apprentice. The program includes a two-week industry work placement. Graduates of this program may also be granted practical credit from the Industry Training Authority.

Commercial Transport Vehicle Mechanic (Certificate)

This program consists of six months of instruction and a minimum of 300 hours (approximately three months) of on-the-job training and has been designed for commercial transport vehicle mechanics who have trained and worked internationally and wish to upgrade their skills and seek employment in the Canadian commercial transport industry. Instruction will focus on subject matter relating to the profession of Commercial Transport Vehicle Mechanic, as set out by the British Columbia Industry Training Authority, for all four levels of apprenticeship. Successful graduates of this program will receive a Commercial Transport Vehicle Mechanic Interprovincial Refresher Certificate from Okanagan College and will be prepared to write the Interprovincial exam administered by the British Columbia Industry Training Authority.

Millwright (Certificate)

Millwrights dismantle, move, install, change layout, set-up, repair, overhaul and maintain all machinery and heavy mechanical equipment, including power shafting, pulleys, conveyors and hoists. They work from plans and blueprints and install equipment using hand tools, power tools, and hoisting equipment. Millwrights use grinders and lathes to make customized parts and construct machinery foundations.

Millwright is designated as Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) under the Inter-Provincial Red Seal program.

If a student is just starting training, or has been unable to secure employment in industry as a Millwright, enrolling in a Foundation Trades Training program is a viable option prior to entering into an Apprenticeship.

The Millwright Foundation Level 1 (Enhanced) program consists of Level 1 technical training in addition to practical and essential skills related to the Millwright (Industrial Mechanic) Apprenticeship program. Successful graduates receive Level 1 technical training credit and 425 work-based hours credit towards completion of the Millwright Apprenticeship program.

Industrial Instrumentation Mechanic (Certificate)

This foundation mechanical trades program, considered one of the best in British Columbia, provides basic training in preparation for employment and apprenticeships in both heavy duty and commercial transport mechanics.
