This is a studio based course intended to provide students with a broad range of information and experience (both practical and conceptual) within the context of painting the figure. The main focus will be working from the nude model with an emphasis on human anatomy, as well as interior space, structure, and composition. In this introductory figure-painting course we will examine the Western tradition of painting the figure, particularly as it relates to the practice of working from the model. Students will gain experience working from direct observation of the nude model, further developing figure, ground, colour and value relationships. Assignments are structured to allow students to explore a variety of approaches to figurative painting drawn from historical and contemporary examples. The course exercises will gradually increase in range and complexity. Completion of EXART 3006 and EXART 3010 is strongly recommended.
