Institutions in the United States and around the world are looking for English speakers trained to teach the language. Since 1990, The New School has been training qualified people to teach English as a second or foreign language. The School of Language Learning and Teaching awards a Certificate in Teaching English (CTE) for successful completion of a structured curriculum of five courses, including a minimum of 50 hours of student teaching.

All CTE courses can be taken for certificate approval on a noncredit basis or for undergraduate credit. Certificate students who are not seeking undergraduate credit (usually because they have a bachelor&,#146,s degree) receive grades of Approved or Not Approved, those who register for credit receive letter grades (C+ or better is required for certificate approval). As national demographics change, there is a rapidly growing need for education professionals who are skilled in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), including English as a Second Language, Dual Language Education and Bilingual Education. The individualized track program, with a concentration in TESOL, is designed for graduate students who are interested in becoming prepared to teach English learners in pre-K through 12 classrooms as well as adult education settings. Graduate students who complete the 18 credit hour endorsement in ESL and/or Bilingual Education may choose to continue their education toward a Master of Arts degree through completing the Individualized Track program. The endorsement in ESL and/or Bilingual Education can be added to a current teaching license. Graduate students who are interested in obtaining an M.A. in Education, with a concentration in TESOL, are not required to be certified teachers and will gain the preparation needed for teaching English in community settings, both in the U.S. and abroad.
